Executive Director, SkillsUSA


SkillsUSA, a national membership association serving high school, college and middle school students preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations, is a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce.


The next Executive Director is a proven executive-level leader whose career in a similar-size or larger national or international organization has been noted by his or her vision for growth, exceptional communication abilities and servant leadership style. This person must exhibit success in collaborating with and convening diverse stakeholders including education (students, teachers, school administrators, etc.) as well as business, federal, state and local government, and nonprofit partners sharing common interests and values.  She/he/they will ensure that the aspirations and goals of the organization are pursued in a collegial, transparent and highly participatory manner.  


Direct experience in a career and technical education (CTE) organization or agency is not required, but general knowledge of the sector and the current education and industry landscape would be highly advantageous.  Experience in a membership driven, Chapter structured organization would be a plus. A savvy leader who possesses the ability to serve members, Chapter Leadership, Board of Directors, State Association Directors, and staff with professionalism and collaboration while also creating a strong internal management structure to build resources and infrastructure within SkillsUSA to meet strategic objectives is paramount. This person is a decisive leader who can develop and support high-producing teams of professional employees through effective management, delegation, professional development and confident decision making.  


As the chief spokesperson of the organization, this person enjoys networking and has a high comfort level with public speaking and requisite presentation skills.  Strong written communication is a must and the ability to speak extemporaneously on multiple topics within the organization would be highly preferred. Experience in fundraising and creating partnerships is important. A background that demonstrates a visionary approach and successful execution of strategic objectives while monitoring such goals using a balanced scorecard approach or similar metrics method would be ideal.  The qualified candidate will possess a high level of business and financial acumen along with experience in continuous process improvement and increasing operational efficiencies.


This person should demonstrate an ability to raise awareness of SkillsUSA nationally and internationally and to support the best interests of members in the communities they serve.  Experience working with stakeholders to build philanthropic and business relationships would be desirable. Along with these skills, some of the important personal attributes we seek include approachability, authenticity, adaptability, optimism, humility, emotional intelligence, good listening skills and a sense of humor.


A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is required; an advanced degree is preferred.  Demonstration of continuing professional education, accreditation in a professional field and board leadership in a state or national nonprofit, professional or trade association would be highly desirable.
